Most of those updates help by keeing us even in protection from attacks to our computers on line by a virus or hacker looking for email, bank account information or some other dishonest way of robbing from us.

Usually ALWAYS keeping your antivirus program turned ON will help you. I say "usually" because these are not perfect. None of them are in my opinion. To make them work their best set them to always check for updates on start up. That way they share any new improvements from their maker.

To help yourself always move your old version up to the newer ones, Example Trend Micro PC-cillin 2007 to Trend Micro 2008.

If do get a free antivirus program with a new computer it often expires in 6 months or a year. And for probably most of us with computers older than 1 year. We need to find a antivirus program that we can use easy without alot of configuring to work. I like trying several popular ones out during the year.

You can find 30 day, 60 day, some 90 day (after a Windows reinstall) FREE TRIALS from Norton/Symantek * TrendMicro * PANDA * and McAfee with a simple websearch. Statistics now show an UNPROTECTED computer running online, websurfing, gaming, or just idle can get as many as 40 different virus, bugs, Spyware or other Malwear in the 1st hour.

One more good idea is to use a 2nd opinion. Go to some other antivirus provider and run a FREE SCAN on your computer from them. You might find a few unprotected spots that need attention that your own program isn't covering.

SERVICE PACK 3

microsoft has a new service pack for Windows Xp comming out. They ask if you want to send reports back to them to improve it. It is in the BETA stage as of feb 25th 2008.
Yeah I tried it. It ate up the service pack 1 and service pack 2 and killed my connection for 2 days. I had to reinstall my motherboard chipset drivers, network adapter driver and came close to Just REINSTALLING WINDOWS again.
